本屆（第22屆）世界杯是由首個伊斯蘭國家卡塔爾所主辦，這是自2002年韓日世界杯以來，第二次在亞洲舉辦的世界杯，打破瑞士紀錄成為史上面積最小的舉辦國。但在首場揭幕戰的比賽中，身為東道主的卡塔爾球隊破紀錄地輸給了厄瓜多爾，打破歷屆以來東道主首場得勝的紀錄！
