本屆（第22屆）世界杯是由首個伊斯蘭國家卡塔爾所主辦，這是自2002年韓日世界杯以來，第二次在亞洲舉辦的世界杯，打破瑞士紀錄成為史上面積最小的舉辦國。但在首場揭幕戰的比賽中，身為東道主的卡塔爾球隊破紀錄地輸給了厄瓜多爾，打破歷屆以來東道主首場得勝的紀錄！

據雅虎新聞報導：「南韓首爾梨泰院10月29日因慶祝萬聖節湧入10萬民眾，卻爆發嚴重推擠傷亡事件，數百人死傷，引發全球關注。總統尹錫悅下令徹查，並宣佈全國哀悼一周。」最近另一次的嚴重踩踏傷亡事故，是10月初在印尼的一場足球比賽釀成足球史上最嚴重的災難之一，人群在幾個出口處衝撞，發生踩踏事故，至少有135人包括數十名兒童在事故中身亡。
